Yeah, but there are a lot of good writers who don't even tag their characters or pairings and also don't tag for warnings. Just the fandom and that's it. There's such a thing as undertagging.

Oh, I do agree about that. Undertagging and overtagging are both problems; I don't understand why someone wouldn't at least tag the main characters and pairings. (People that post fic typically want readers...so it seems counterproductive.)

Unless I'm misunderstanding, wouldn't they opt for "Choose Not to Warn" vs 'not tagging for warnings'. I am confused - how is that undertagging?

Maybe I don't get it cause I'm guilty of undertagging. Main characters, main tropes, CNTW, and that's it.

"Choose Not to Warn" vs 'not tagging for warnings'

For a reader, aren't they the same?

But if you're tagging your characters, tropes and warnings you're tagging a lot more than some.

I think tags and warnings on AO3 are not quite the same thing, as I frequently see "Author chose not to use archive warnings" followed by some tags. Then there are times where I see things like "Rape/non-con" in bold and stuff like character names in regular text. Tags can function as warnings (because I do see tags for things some people might want to steer clear of) but they are also for benign stuff like "fluff" and "alternate universe." At least, that is my understanding.
