Well, I wouldn't say it's ever "too late"? I'd prefer if authors never said anything like this at all, but at a minimum, waiting until Harry Potter is Not A Thing Anymore should be the least courtesy she could do.

Pfft. They're her books, she can say anything she wants about them. Now if she was telling the fans that THEY had to stop shipping Ron/Hermione, or pulling all the books off the shelves and replacing them with altered versions, that would be worth getting bent out of shape about, but she's done no such thing.

Oh, I agree she has the RIGHT to do it, I just find it kind of irritating because she has the capacity to create such waves.

Nothing wrong with new editions. The work is often better for it. See examples by King and Dahl.

But when she says something in an interview, a perfectly reasonable response is, "If that's what you meant to say, why didn't you make those changes to the text while you were actively editing it?"
