I found the comment 'it went off on the second book' on a list of recs of other original slash fics. After I enjoyed Captive Prince so much, I thought 'Wow, this quality exists for free on the internet? How can I get more!' So I googled 'Captive Prince' and 'recs'. I did find more links to fics, but sadly none of them compare.
Although I did find this quite fun bodyguard/poor little rich boy caper that was the cream of the rest:

It was still updating, but now it's complete so I must go and read the rest.
I agree with you on all counts. It was how Captive Prince moved through and beyond the sex slave trope into amazing gripping world building. Her research must have been painstaking, even though she was clever enough to invent a fictional world. Everything impressed me. Especially how she handles UST, which is the best I've ever seen in anything at all. The violence is also Game-of-Thrones level hardcore, but I wasn't turned off as it's exactly what would happen in that world.
Perhaps it's not such an easy read once it gets in, especially if you're not a big reader, and you're not fascinated by ancient worlds. But I am, and Captive Prince hits everything I crave.

Thank you so much for that rec! I'm already on Chapter 4. I was super picky about fic in this genre before Captive Prince, but now I'm even worse. All I want is skillful worldbuilding and great character chemistry, is that so much to ask? Oh, my god, don't get me started on the UST. That is my utmost favorite kink and CP's author did it perfectly. It's basically a how-to manual of sexual tension.

Yes, yes, a hundred times yes. I've learned so much by reading and re-reading Captive Prince. Although the author herself on her blog admits she in turn learned all about UST from another fic, which she links and discusses. She seems like a really nice person.
I missed the broodmare admission. Broodmare anon, I salute your balls.
I have more fanfic/original fic recs on my DW. Since we share some similar tastes at least.
