[Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith]

Me too. And it wasn't because of the writing. It was because the actors were selling the hell out of it.

Ewan did the best damn acting in the prequels. I totally bought it.

(interestingly, my brothers, who read the Jedi Apprentice YA novels before ever seeing the movies, were saddest about Qui-Gon dying. Their relationship was great in those books. The Jedi Quest books also get you more attached to the Obi/Ani partnership and make the volcano scene even MORE tragic)

I'd say its the acting? Ewan pretty much outdoes most people in the new trilogy.

I was watching the RLM Star Wars reviews again the other day just for the hell of it and I was reminded of how much I was excited for ep III at the time it came out. Like, I saw the midnight showing with my bff and everything. I liked it at the time, but my feelings have tapered off. The eps I-III felt really hollow when I watched them again. I remember this part because I wished their on screen relationship actually reflected that depth of feeling. I mean, the actors did a great job in that part telling us and showing us their characters cared for each other, but those feelings hadn't really been shown before, despite the fact I think we were supposed to have seen the depth of friendship. Lucas really missed the mark.

Yep, looking back I think Ewan was the only thing I liked in that movie. He was the only one I could sympathize with.

I cried in the cinema when I saw this movie.

Me too.

ITA. It was the acting, definitely. The ton of his voice and the expression on his face was devastating.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. The way his voice just breaks simply shatters you.

Ewan was the best part about the prequels, and Obi Wan is my favorite. I'd go as far as to say he saves them. But only when he's on a scene.

Ewan really was the best part about the movies.

Eeeeee-yup :) He also was probably the only thing that really made me believe this was taking place in the same universe as the original trilogy.

Perfect casting ;3; I wanted to be him when I grew up.

(His deadpan-snarkyness~)

Yep. The prequels were almost like a massive war waged between Ewan and Hayden, with one trying to save every scene he was in and the other trying to doom it.

The ending of Episode III was surprisingly good considering how shitty the rest of the prequels were, yeah.

That scene was tough, but I cried more in the earlier one with the kids...

Everyone hates on this movie, but I liked it. IDK. I'm not a SW purist, is probably why. (Nothing wrong with being one but I like all of the movies for what they are. The ones I've seen in recent memory, that is.)

I could almost see your point, OP ... but then I remembered the shot cuts back to Anakin going 'I HATE YOOOOOUUUU ARGHBLARGBLARGBLARG' before he bursts into flames. Hayden Christensen really did ruin every scene he was in.

Same. But then again, I was and still sort of am a huge Obi/Ani shipper.

>_>

That scene was worse and more heartfelt in the book, but I loved the movie version.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ewan MacGregor was the best thing in those prequels. I teared up a bit at that scene and I can promise you that I am not at all emotionally invested in Star Wars anything.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep yep yep, Ewan was really the saving grace of these movies. I love them because I love cheesy sci-fi and romance, but the acting and writing really are atrocious. And it's SOOO frustrating, because when given decent material, Hayden Christensen isn't that awful an actor, and Natalie Portman and Samuel L Jackson and Liam Neeson are FABULOUS!

GUH, I cried during this scene too. It helped that I was a huuuuuge Obi/Qui-Gon and Obi/Ani shipper, but Ewan really sold it.

I always say, it's very difficult to direct yourself onscreen. It doesn't make you a bad actor if you can't--it's a really specific skill set that probably favors more technical actors than Method actors. Ewan was able to do it, but I don't think Hayden and Natalie could distance themselves enough--the stereotype is that British actors are technical and American, Method so that may explain it. At any rate the fault is Lucas's, not the actors. He should've been able to tear himself away from the greenscreen and the Macbook long enough to watch his cast through a lens and see what kind of performance they were giving.
