I really liked the Lizzie Borden movie, tbh.

Me, too, it was neat.

I wanted to like it, but I'm kind of nitpicky about historical crime stuff and the movie was full of anachronisms and lame attempts to sex things up. The modern soundtrack felt very out of place, too.

Maybe she's reached a point in her career/life where she can pick the roles she wants, and she's secretly always wanted to be in a cheesy lifetime movie and has also secretly always loved shitty kids/family films. Maybe she's living her dream!

It's funny, my first thought of her goes to Casper.

Not a bad thing, actually.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Casper and the Addams Family, for me.

Sometimes actors just take what they can get, OP. Some have the luxury of picking and choosing, but many will just be happy to get a big part, even if it's not their preferred genre or type of character.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
This kind of thing just happens to actors. All the time, in fact.

She gave an interview on the Nerdist podcast recently, and it sounded to me like she's unwilling to play the Hollywood game that a lot of starlets go through. And it's always tough for a child actor to transition into adulthood--look at Anna Paquin. She won an Oscar at, what, 12? And now she's on True Blood, a cheesy supernatural soap opera. (Which I love. It is fine, fine cheese.)

Point being, past success is no guarantee of future performance.

I haven't listened to that Nerdist podcast appearance, but I think that happens to a bunch of actors; they are happy to be working, and if doing stuff like Smurfs 2 pays the bills, they're kind of fine with it.

True Blood might be cheesy, but it's on its seventh season heading into an eighth. Paquin is likely making crazy money for it. I'd be surprised if it was lower than a quarter of a million per episode. That's a very far cry from being in a Lifetime movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I was wondering this myself the other day. I was never a fan but it's weird nonetheless. Some actors are just huge one day and the next, they're just not acting period.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Case in point, James Marsters.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I've wondered how much of it is that her aesthetic is so nineties.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
it really is. She's cute as a button, but she doesn't have a "timeless" quality to her looks.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
i call foul on the hollywood attitude than man getting older = better, woman getting older = disappear because she's not hot enough anymore. or maybe pliable enough.

shit heads.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that necessarily applies both because she's only 33 (and there are a number of actresses who are older than her and still successful) and because her face shape and features lend a younger appearance.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Apropo of nothing, but thanks to this secret I now know who I'd cast as Molly in a neuromancer movie, if I were in charge.

I thought she was doing the indie movie scene now.

People's career trajectories change, especially if they're movie stars. Her not being as big as she was 10 years ago, isn't that big of a surprise (and I say this as some one who really likes her).

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she was in a lot of indie movies as a little kid, bigger movies in her early teens, then went back to indie stuff again for ages. Most recently she was on Pan Am - a good show too soon cancelled.

She's working in the business and not waiting tables like so many aspiring actors. So even if she's no longer A list, she's at least ON a list.

And that's a heck of a lot better than most people can say.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I loathed it. It was just so full of WTF... Lizzie Borden running around in a chemise and vamping around her bedroom naked? That weird sexual thing with her father?? With all that and the horrible indie music in the background, it was like watching Reign. I wish to god that people would quit making this pseudo-historical crap when they're not interested in the actual story or facts.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's entirely possible she needs to fire her agent and get a new one. Generally, when actors have a big ol' comeback, they just fired their agent for someone who's actually interested in giving them a career.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like she enjoys what she's doing now a lot more, though. And more power to her.

I suspect it's something like what happened to Mara Wilson. Entirely valid reasons for deciding fuck it Hollywood, she's doing Night Vale instead.
