help!

I was hoping someone could recommend a good free virus protection. My old one finally ran out and I know there are several free ones on the internet, but what do you recommend for convenience and that do their job?

AVG is good. That's what I used before I started using the one our school offers.

Seconding AVG, I like it myself.

Avast is what I (and the people around me) use, I've never had any issues with it.

Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty great. It's been more effective (and less annoying) than Avast for me so far

What was your old one?

For those looking for a pay AV that doesn't suck shit, I recommend ESET's NOD32.

It was McAfee and then Trend and then Norton. It was whatever antivirus my school had a deal with that year. I didn't care for any of them.

They're all basically terrible. Norton may be the worst.

I swear by NOD32, though. Give their free trial a shot -- it's basically never, ever caused me an issue with one exception. Even if you don't use it after the trial, if you're in the market in the future for a subscription-based AV that actually is superior to most free alternatives as well as the popular but shitty subscription AVs you really can't go wrong with NOD32.

Well, unless they get into another fight with Bluetack or something...

I realize they weren't the best, but they were required to be on the network while in school, silly networks.

But thanks for the tips, I'll definitely consider it.

Seconding this. When I bought my laptop at Micro Center they recommended NOD32 to me and it's been way better and less annoying than any of my previous bought AV programs.

I am by NO MEANS an expert, but after reading several reviews I decided to download Panda a few weeks ago (my free trial of McAfee on a new comp ran out) and so far it's worked well - really stays in the background, doesn't get in the way, but I haven't had any virus or malware issues.

Of course this is in the space of a few weeks so we'll see. But I have no reason thus far to switch; it's doing its job and not being annoying.

I like and use AVAST. No issues with it or any malware on my computer.

I like Malwarebytes for anti-malware.

I use that for malware, but I've been trying to get a more all around program too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Microsoft Security Essentials coupled with Mawlware AntiBytes and Spybot when I really want to clean it up. I installed MSE after AVG repeatedly failed to protect me against a virus that had the bank banning me from my account when the virus would try to access the bank. Several times.
