lol you joke but it does get me in trouble when I forget that other people actually care about spoilers

I guess the proper term is "sensation novel". There's a Wikipedia page. Basically they're a kind of book that was popular in the Victorian Era that tended to be suspenseful and melodramatic and feature lots of ~shocking things like murder and adultery and insanity. They are wonderful and I need to read more. Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon would be good places to start if you're interested.
