Re: Stuff in fandom/fandoms you're tired of hearing about.

Fans getting weirdly defensive about the concept that their show/game/whatever is sexist/racist/whatever. A product being flawed doesn't mean it's worthless and mentioning flaws in a product isn't advocating that all the copies everywhere are burned etc.

And I'm obviously not talking about weird shit like insisting a product is sexist because the main character isn't female or something. I'm talking about mentioning that some episode had a five second long close up on the main female character's g-string for no reason.

Fucking THANK YOU ohmygod.

Like some poor sap will make ONE critical comment about how "this scene was sexist/racist/could have been better written" and all these batshit fans pour out of the woodwork like "HDU IT'S PERFECT AND AMAZING AND FLAWLESS."

these people have seemingly never heard of being able to like something and also recognize it's flaws.

I've found that when I refer to a given thing as having been "in bad taste" rather than having been "problematic", it doesn't provoke as much kneejerking in either direction. Dunno if it would work for you, but I thought I'd pass it along.

That's a really good idea. Especially because, most of the time, you don't mean "This whole product is xxx-ist" - you just don't like a scene or some characterization or something.
