It's called hyperbole. "I think Amanda palmer should be unsuccessful in her music career and forced into a job where people she doesn't ever talk to real people" while accurate to my feelings of her is less interesting or satisfying to say.

DA

It is satisfying to you to say another human being should die in agony? You have serious issues. You should really talk to an adult about your issues, before it's too late.

Hyperbole isn't a crime, dude. If I go on a long hike in new boots and say, "Ugh, my feet are KILLING me!" it doesn't mean that I actually think my feet are engaged in a murderous conspiracy and I'm therefore delusional and need professional help. It's hyperbole. Mature, reasonable adults understand this because they do it too and I can almost guarantee you that you at one point or another in your life have used a figure of speech that wasn't LITERALLY true.

Deep breaths, outraged anon.

DA You know, there's hyperbole that's just gross and ridiculous and unwanted, and so often directed at famous women who fall off a pedestal.

Quite honestly I find any stated (even hyperbolic) desire to see someone die by an old and really disgusting execution method like that pretty unsettling. ("fuck off and die" is bad enough even without that imo.)

Personally I think hyperbole is falling out of fashion. It seems to me that these days, people are more likely to take it literally/think it's overly harsh, especially online. If most people are missing your point, it kind of loses it's power.

Hyperbole as a device relies on being recognisable - and on the internet, it almost never is.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, for one thing, you have different cultures to deal with and for another, you never know if the person writing these things are really just using hyperbole or do really wish these things on other people.
