You know how there's some songs whose content may be really meaningful or touching, but due to the song's tune, wording, metaphors, chorus, or whatever, the song is deemed too "silly" to be really discussed as something deep or serious?

Maybe not "silly", but so many TMBG songs do this to me. For the first however many listens, it's just random words. Then, two years later, it hits me, "Oh my god, that song's actually about something!?"

And I find quite a bit of pop to have deeper lyrics than people give credit for. Kesha has Die Young and Out Alive, which are actually pretty dark and/or depressing if you just read the lyrics. Or happy, if you read it that way. I like that about her. Both songs seem so accepting of fate in a way I'm not good at. I really enjoy things that can be both dark and happy at the same time.

...I'll cop to misting up at a few lines from Here Comes Science. It's hard not to be moved by so much wonder at the world, even if the songs are silly and fun. "You and I are complicated, but we're made of elements" gets me every time. :')

I've never seen a better representation of longing than "I don't want the world. I just want your half." from Ana Ng.

And the song Purple Toupee is just staggering when you learn what it's about.

"Every jumbled pile of person has a thinking part that wonders what the part that isn't thinking isn't thinking of." from Where Your Eyes Don't Go is probably my favorite lyric of theirs.

TMBG are so good at deceptively simple music.

I really hate Ke$ha's Die Young song. It came out and played constantly right after my mom died and I couldn't listen to the radio without catching it (and what seemed like a record breaking number of times death was mentioned in one song).

Does "Snoopy's Christmas" by The Royal Guardsmen count? Sure, it's about a newspaper comic strip character's fantasies, but OTOH it's also an incredibly simple and sweet ode to peace invoking the Christmas Truce of 1914. The chorus gets me every damn time :)

Anyone else immediately think of "Silly Songs with Larry" when they saw the subject line? :P

It was last year, my 27th year on this earth, when it dawned on me that 99 red balloons was about nuclear Armageddon.

It's not exactly silly, but pretty upbeat: Wake me up by Avicii. It's just exactly how I feel in my life right now, my depression having me stuck between wanting to just disappear, have the world keep turning without me but not actually wanting to die. The way I don't see any purpose in my life. I just want to literally wake up and get on with my life but I can't. That's what the song means to me.

I remember when "Hey Ya" came out and everyone thought it was a good happy fun-time song, but I started listening to the lyrics and was like "...."

They even address it in the song. "Y'all don't wanna hear you, you just wanna dance." That might be the most depressing part of all, because it's absolutely true.

Or at least it was until some dude did an acoustic cover of it, and sang it with the gravity of the lyrics rather than all bouncy like the original, and everyone else finally went "...wait..."

Agreeing with TMBG, too. I remember after a nasty break-up, "Shoehorn With Teeth" was the one that got me tearing up.

Just realized today, too, that Weezer's "Keep Fishin" is disturbingly relevant to my situation, and that's a bouncy song with a video featuring the Muppets for crying out loud.
