I like slash, but I think friendships are undervalued in a lot of fandoms.

I agree that friendships are often undervalued but it annoys me that people so often pick on slash when they complain about this when het is just as bad.

This is true.

I'm so disappointed by the utter lack of friendship fic in some of my fandoms *eyeing u Poirot fans*. There's less of a problem with het (because there's less het, and because there aren't many M&F friendships, what with the canon sources having been created either in the 19th or in the 20th century), but I imagine I would be furious if het Joanlock suddenly became more prominent than gen. And Miss Lemon? Why do people never write about her unless she's in love with Hastings? WTF? There's such potential for an awesome brot3!

I hate it when people say "but lovers can be friends! The dynamics stays the same! Why do you care if they bang?" NO. The dynamics does NOT stay the same. If it did, why would the characters themselves care about becoming a couple? If it's just for sex, fine. But that's not called "romance". That's just friends having sex. And I must say that I have yet to see a work the author of which would actually write this kind of relationship.

Meh, as long as you don't act superior about it (I've seen it happen and dear god is it annoying) and no one gives you shit for it, I don't see the problem.

+1

(Though my personal preferences tend to be ridiculously predictable and are often exactly the opposite of OP's, it doesn't really matter.)

... Though Starsky and Hutch was an amazing show and considering how affectionate those two were I can see why you used them in the secret.

I pretty much agree. Yeah, sometimes slashy sexy-times is just plain hot, but I think I mainly only gravitate to the slash when the affection in the friendship is lacking.

Nothing wrong with that.

That pic is so fucking cute omg. I think I went "aww!" out loud.

And....I sorta agree? I love reading fic of bff slash, but it's usually a fic-only thing. I only rarely really want them to be a couple instead of bffs. I'm more likely to actually actively want a couple to get together when they feel like they're holding back.

I love slash but also hate that there aren't more platonic friendships and partnerships in fic (and in canon). Every human encounter does not have to end up sexual. There are other, important things in the world. Sleepy Hollow fans, I'm looking side eyed at you.

Yeahhhhh, shame on ussssssssssss.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
OT, but I don't think that pic is of Starsky and Hutch -- I'm pretty sure it's the actors while out of character. ;)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
It is the actors, not the characters. I know this for a fact.

/watched the show way too much

You are correct, it was an on-set shot of the actors during the filming of "Murder Ward".

Were they bffs IRL too? Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure I've heard that they were, although it was a long time ago so it didn't occur to me. That just makes it ten times cuter :) :) :)

They still sort of are. They've both been through a lot, David Soul it turns out was sexually exploited by Andy Warhol's crowd when he was quite young and he has a lot of hang ups, he wasn't able to cope after Starsky and Hutch, and seems to have a bit of a drinking habit. Anyhow he moved to London afterward and has lived in a little flat in North London since, spends his time down the local pub drinking and telling stories with the old boys. Bless him he's quite sweet. He has done bits of theatre in London, was great in Jerry Springer the Opera by all accounts and has had a couple of plays, and appeared in some British telly and films.

Anyhow Paul Michael Glaser is much more stable but did have the tragedy of losing his wife to HIV. I have seen him on chat shows when he has come to London to "support Davey" when David S is doing theatre, so yes I think they remained close.

I completely understand your pain, but at the same time, I'm completely in fandom for the shipping. It's conflicting.
