There aren't many historical epics in the Hetalia fandom?.. Judging by all the secrets saying "I learnt history from Hetalia", I thought there must be tons of these.

You are right, it's sad. I'd write the shit out of the battle of Trafalgar. And the Napoleonic wars in general. Also, Victorian!England and Jack the Ripper. And Victorian!England fangirling over Sherlock Holmes.

Russia of Ivan the Fourth, anyone? Or steampunk-y fics about the Industrial Revolution? Pity I'm not a part of this fandom.

Somebody create a Mongolia character and then write a historical epic that's just 200 years of her kicking the shit out of everybody.

Basically, that xkcd comic "River Tam Beats Up Everybody" but with Hetalia.

I want to see this.

There actually is a Mongolia (who is probably a dude, but we have only seen them once in chibi sketch form iirc).

There are. You just have to look in the right places and for the right authors.

...at least there were when I left fandom a long ass time ago.

Semi-related but I'd kill to have a Les Mis/Hetalia crossover with France at the barricades and England just being like 'Are you fucking kidding me, this again??' and Germany going 'pls stop singing I can hear you all the way from here'

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men--

"Ja, now SHUT UP!"

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

I'm very tempted now to write a historical epic about the Sultanate of Malacca.

And you're right. It's a bit sad that most of the fics in Hetalia are just fluff or crack, or both.

Well considering that the majority of Hetalia fandom seems to be historically illiterate 14 year olds who are only in it for the omgyaoisquee-ness, I don't find it surprising. I know how you feel, though, I could have written this secret myself back when I was first getting into the Hetalia fandom. Then I got to know who else was mostly in the fandom, and I stopped wondering. I don't even participate anymore because I'm so tired of all the 14 year old omgyaoisquee-ness, and I'm too embarrassed to take part in any Hetalia-themed events at cons anymore because they do. not. know. how. to. tone. it. down. in. public. /rant over

I can't help feeling my surprise over this (and the comments kinda) is that it's more that there aren't many historical fics anymore.
I haven't read/sought out Hetalia fic in years, but while I had historical stuff didn't feel hard to come across! Even in gen stuff from the kink meme.

By now it might all be just buried in the nonsense sea, but still there!

Oh. Now that I think longer about it, I also remember history fic being near prevalent (if not commonly requested on the kink meme too). But that was when I was in the fandom a few years ago, so OP probably does have to dig harder where I didn't need to at all.

History fic is pretty common. The problem for me at least is that so many people use history to justify the cast being massively, massively out of character. There are definitely good ones out there though.

As for historical 'epics', by which I imagine you mean super long history intensive chapter fics, it's... a ton of work. I know I've had some ideas for a few here and there, but it's so much work and so much research because I do want it to be as 100% accurate as possible, that I just can't bring myself to commit to it. I imagine a lot of other people are the same.

"Huge Historical Epics" were pretty much the only thing I ever read in the Hetalia fandom.

Recs or it didn't happen.

Is your AO3 search function broken? ;p

Seriously though, I mostly read Hetalia fic on live journal. http://mithrigil.livejournal.com/ 's Hetalia works are almost entirely of the country-focused, historical epic variety and none of the zany chibification of atrocities variety.

I feel you so much :(

It's really sad, because historical Hetalia fics (in my experience) don't get much love either, when written.

Because of secret # 14, I read this secret in a British accent.

It worked fairly well.

I'm going to do this with everything from now one, methinks.
