Sailor Moon

[personal profile] supermanda 2014-02-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, beautifuls!

I recently picked up the re-release of the Sailor Moon manga and I absolutely love it! I'm on Vol. 4 right now and I've been watching the anime with it. I can't believe how different the anime is from the manga!

Just wanted to get this out there for discussion <3 I don't remember the anime too well (even if I did, I was a kid with completely different views), so nooo spoilers ^^

Also! There are these short stories and the Sailor V spin off. Would anyone recommend getting those as well? I'm curious to know where the short stories sit in the SM timeline?

ANYWAY, oblig question: favourite Sailor Scout + who are you most like?
My favourite is Mars but I am definitely Usagi D: I'm hyper, always hungry, ALWAYS sleeping, and a huge cry baby T_T

Tuxedo mask doesn't die, the Starlights are men, Galaxia is defeated by the power of love and friendship.

More importantly, the cats don't die.

Would definitely recommend the short stories, as some of them build upon character development for some of the senshi.

Volume one of the short stories contains Chibi-Usa's Picture Diary, three short stories about Chibi-Usa. I think they were written/set at the end of the second, third and fourth arcs respectively. The stories are short and simple with lots of gags but it's nice to see Chibi-Usa getting some development as a senshi as well as spending time with her friends.

Volume 1 also contains the Exam Battle stories- The Melancholy of Makoto-chan, Ami-chan's First Love and Rei and Minako's Girl's School Battle. They're set between the 4th and 5th arc, as they detail the girls passing their high school entrance exams.

The last story is The Secret of Hammer Price Hall. It's a short story that was originally published in the 17th volume of the manga and doesn't seem to fit anywhere into the timeline as such. It's another story focusing on Chibi-Usa, but one of the characters is based on a real guy who won an auction to appear in the manga!

Volume 2 of the short stories is primarily made up of 'The Lover of Princess Kaguya' which was originally volume 11 of the manga. If you've ever seen the S movie, this is the manga upon which it was based. I personally loved that movie and it turned out that it was quite faithful to the manga. I think it's set sometime in the third arc of the story, as Setsuna, Haruka and Michiru appear, but Hotaru doesn't.

Volume 2 also has Casablanca Memory, a rather melancholic story about Rei and some backstory for her. It's bittersweet and pretty. Again, not sure where it fits into the story.

Finally, Parallel Sailor Moon finishes off the short stories. It's a parallel universe, so it has no bearing on the story and was originally published in the Volume Infinity artbook (a doujinshi artbook Naoko Takeuchi published herself with tons of art from her friends, assistants and seiyuu from the anime). It's... weird. I personally wasn't a fan.

My verdict, though? They're worth picking up, if just for the extra content and character development (and great for if you wanted the whole collection!)

Oh, awesome! Thanks! ^^ I'm excited to read them now! I love a little bonus content

Saturn is my favorite and the one I'm the most like... well, I'm only like S season Hotaru, but she's my favorite in all incarnations. Even though I never read as far as her arc in the manga, where I've heard she has a bigger role than she ever did in the anime.

I should also read the manga again now that there are better English releases. I couldn't handle Tokyopop for very long.

I love the manga; it's second only to PGSM for me. I've not yet gotten around to reading Sailor V or the short stories though, so I can't help you there.

I identify the most with Hotaru, more so in the manga than the anime. Usagi's my favorite though.

The manga is okay, but the anime was superior in a lot of ways. Especially in regards to the characterization if the villains and some of the senshi. Tbh, besides Usagi, everybody in the manga is kinda flat.

My favorite senshi is Uranus. Not sure who I'm like though.

I totally get what you're saying when you say they're kinda flat. It's like none of them have their own voices - they all have the same voice in my head when I read them. I'm not a fan of the way it's translated though, I think that might have to do with it

Re: Sailor Moon

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the translation certainly doesn't help matters but the the characters are pretty flat in the original version iirc. Especially the villains. Nephrite, for example, is killed off pretty quickly and doesn't have much personality. Especially compared to the anime.

The pacing and shortness of the manga doesn't help either.

Very true. I think I love that it's quick because I really don't like the translation lol so it kinda just cuts to the chase. Not sure if I can handle slow parts with those voices.

But like I said, I'm pairing it with the anime, because I do love that there is more interaction between the characters and I believe their friendship a million times more than in the manga. In the manga it feels forced, I don't have much of a sense of strong love between the girls when I read it

I'm with you on the translation, it made the manga a chore to read. You'd think they'd do a better job the time around on it, but it still has quite a few issues.

The anime really did a great job highlighting the friendships the girls had and it spent episodes showing them bonding all the time. The manga, not so much.

I highly recommend Sailor V (although technically Sailor Moon is the spinoff from that!) and the short stories! The short stories are really fun and provide some nice characterization. They just kind of fit in "whenever" from what I remember, though it's usually vaguely attached to the general arc--like the story about Sailor Chibi Moon fighting the evil dentist ghost is somewhere in SuperS, but not specifically connected to the rest of the plot. Same as the story where she and Saturn visit a haunted pawn shop--it's "somewhere in Stars."

My favorite is Sailor Jupiter and I'm probably most like her or Chibiusa, really.

And it's not that bad a thing that you're most like Usagi! She definitely grows up over the course of the series (but she still likes napping and videogames and food) and becomes a good leader and compassionate friend.

I really almost have no memory of the anime, but Sailor V isn't the leader in the show, right? I know in the manga, Sailor V was actually the original leader sailor senshi because Usagi was the princess. They still wrote her as the leader though

Re: Sailor Moon

[personal profile] leikomgwtfbbq 2014-02-06 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, her role as leader is kind of watered down in the anime and her character is somewhat more goofy, where in the manga, she's the leader/decoy princess and while she's bubbly and has typical high-school-girl interests, she's also a soldier and a leader through and through.

I like the Sailor V spin off. It's only two volumes and it delves a bit into Minako's character and her start as a sailor scout. I haven't read the short stories, but I think I'll pick them up too.

My fav as a kid was Sailor Mars, but as an adult I kinda gravitate towards Jupiter. We're both tall, love cooking, and are daydreamers.

I like the manga but I wish it was a little longer. It feels like it goes a little too quickly for me, so there's very little development for most of the senshi and all the villains. The anime could do with some cutting down but I still like it better in the end because it gives the characters more, well, character. I wish the anime would get a western re-release -- through some lucky Amazon stalking I managed to get seasons 1 and 2 for fairly decent prices but I'd like to get S, at least, and of course that one seems to be consistently the most expensive :/

My favorite senshi are probably Jupiter and Saturn.

Re: Sailor Moon

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
It could have definitely benefitted from being longer. That way the characters could have been fleshed out more and more of the mythos could have been explored more. I'm hoping the new anime, if it ever comes out, follows the manga and builds on it. I'd love to learn more abut the Silver Millenium. And dear god, I hope it fleshes out the characters.

I'm hoping they will republish a new series box set in the future along with all of the new manga and merch! My torrent collection of the series is tiny

My favorite Sailor Senshi is Sailor Mercury, although I'm probably most like Uasgi. I can be a bit selfish and stuff, but when I need to, I can buck up and make things happen.
