Whose underpaid labour will you exploit to get there? Seriously, think about it.

Winning the lottery? Cause, honestly, that's the only way I'm ever going to be rich.

Although do you truly think that everyone who is wealthy automatically is exploitative and evil? That's a pretty broad generalization. I would hope that by working hard in an appropriate field, at least some who become rich are good people.

I saw somewhere also where they asked if corporate leaders were bad people and many said yes because they have all this money and we have so little, but when asked the same about celeb actors and sports figures the answers were mostly no, they deserved it.

otoh, don't CEO-types tend to be a bit more sociopathic than the average person? I haven't heard such in relation to actors and other celebs.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
actors and other celebs probably tend to be narcissistic

It depends what you mean by "rich".

Yes, there are ways to get to be wealthy without doing terrible exploitative shit, like being a star actor or an athlete - probably some other ways as well. And it's definitely possible to be... somewhere above "comfortably middle class" just through career. But if you're talking about real wealth, that's not how most people get there. And those people rarely get into the really, really super-wealthy brackets. There's a phrase that comes up often in sports labor disputes that says that it's all about "millionaires fighting billionaires" and it's true. Athletes and celebs almost never get to the real fuck-you money. And getting to that level of wealth almost always requires some skeevy shit one way or another. I don't think you can get there just by working hard unless your chosen industry is the finance industry. And fuck the finance industry in a million ways.

So, it's true that you don't have to do exploitative or evil stuff to get wealthy. But most people who are really top 1%-type wealthy do, and it increases as you get closer to the top end.

For the record, it's even LESS than the 1%. IIRC, the baseline for being in the 1% is at least 500k a year. And it's totally 100% possible to do that "just through career," hell, if you're in the top few levels of any corporation, you may be there. We're talking about any absolutely teeny tiny fraction of people making millions and millions per year.

tbqh, I side-eye most sports figures and actors myself.
