Re: Unhealthy relationship with food

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
The only advice I have is that I felt I had a lot more control over my eating habits and weight when I started a food diary (through MyFitnessPal). It was to lose weight, and it helped me do that, but what was really valuable for me is that it gave me an idea of nutritional and caloric value of the food I was eating as compared to how much I should be eating for my height/weight. And through that I felt I had control over my body, rather than just hoping the food I was eating was low in calories or healthy and never really knowing, or assuming I'd blown my diet without knowing and binging in despair.

There's an option in MyFitnessPal (and probably most apps like that) to plug in your stats and plan to maintain your weight. You could try that as an experiment? It might even reveal to you a pattern to your cravings.

Otherwise, preventative habits like drinking water regularly, planning healthy snacks and having them on hand (something like a wholemeal cracker and cheese or peanut butter is going to better than candy and cheaper than fruit) also help a lot. That and cutting yourself some slack and not beating yourself up if you have some chocolate - you can even plan it into you diet if you do start a food diary :)
