Planets are distinguished from other celestial bodies in that they are singular objects (i.e. not a clump of things like the asteroid belt) that have a regular orbit around a star, rather than just floating around at random like comets and such. Pluto is a singular object in a regular orbit around our sun and thus is clearly not a comet or an asteroid or anything else you might be in danger of confusing it with. Therefore I don't see why we can't keep on considering it a planet, at least in a casual context. Maybe you need to invent some other scientific class for it if you're doing fancy astronomical calculations and need to take the eccentric orbit into account, but going saying "OMGZ ITS NOT A PLANET" to laymen who don't care about the technical stuff is pretty dumb, overall.
There's no need to be sarcastic. If you have some super-special-awesome scientific explanation for why it's not that I wasn't aware of, then please, enlighten me. I'm all ears. Being a douchebag, however, doesn't accomplish anything.

Pluto is part of the Kuiper Belt, a second asteroid belt, if you will. The only difference is that the Kuiper Belt objects are more icy.
If Pluto is a planet, so are ALL Kuiper Belt objects.
If Kuiper Belt objects are planets, then so are all Trans-Neptunian Objects.
If all of the Trans-Neptunian Objects are planets, then so are all asteroids.
So now we've got hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of planets. Majority of them have only identification numbers. Since you're the one who proposed the idea, you'll be the one who gets to name them all.

I'll help! :D
