It wasn't sudden. They'd been debating on and off about it since it's discovery until the conference finally put an end to it. The general public just wasn't largely aware of the controversy.

I remember it being brought up a few times in the 90's, but it always just seemed to die. I never thought it would actually happen, and then it just sort of did.

I'm not high and mighty, I'm frustrated and blunt.

People are quibbling about the denomination because they're used to treating Pluto as a planet. If science ignored new knowledge in order to adhere to what people are used to, we'd all still be told the Earth is flat.

Pluto has nothing in common with the rest of the planets. It never did. The only reason it ever did get treated as a planet was because astronomers didn't yet know there were other rocks floating there with it.
