I think personally I have a lot of weird issues with smoking, since I grew up around chain smokers and am strongly against it myself (although unlike many, I don't care if other people do it and I actually loathe all the 'smokers are subhuman' shit, because hey, those are my parents).

But it's not surprising that people would find it sexy? People are really easily persuaded by images, and the tobacco industry has been huge for centuries. Smoking is made to look sexy in advertising and thousands of movies. It's just something that's in our subconscious, and it's a huge part of why people start smoking in the first place: to look cool. Some of us (like myself) have to consciously fight the 'fantasy' image of smoking with the reality of "I don't want to be hacking up my lungs constantly". But the fantasy image is still there.

FTFY. Trust me people. Two family members so far, both of whom had been quit for several decades by the time they each became ill. Any form of "smoking is sexy" (even with a thousand and one disclaimers) just adds more bodies to the pile.

AYRT: Oh my god I KNOW. Did you not read the part where I said I've lived with smokers all my life? They are still smoking and guess what, those are very real concerns for me! Just because I didn't list EVERY BAD THING ABOUT SMOKING (which I'm pretty sure most people KNOW from middle school health class, jfc) doesn't mean I don't know about them! I'm sorry for your losses but I DON'T REALLY NEED TO BE PREACHED AT. In fact I feel like you might be trolling because personally if it was me and my loved ones died I wouldn't be using that in a stupid internet argument about what I may or may not find vaguely sexy. Not that I need to justify myself to you but I don't smoke, won't ever smoke, and I'm not having kids so there's no danger of me raising someone who smokes, so I don't even know what you're trying to accomplish here. But if I sometimes fantasize about sexy characters who are smoking and look sexy while they're smoking it doesn't actually harm you and I don't really see how it harms me either. My sexual fantasies aren't killing anyone.

Aaaaagggh no I meant(was aiming at) those people who (like in the thread in question) defend the idea that making smoking sexy in fic is somehow not as bad/gets a free pass/is okay/whatever.
