because IRL I fail at it spectacularly, and books are like... an easier version of RL where everything is written down instead of being somewhere inside people's heads

So much this. Emotions are infinitely easier when written down more or less linearly in black and white. Narratives (usually) tend to have a logic that in RL is so very difficult to find.
