Re: Stupidest Thing You've Ever Hear Out of a Doctor

It took a year to convince my current doctor that I have migraines. A year I went without any help for the pain.

Another doctor shamed me and "tsk tsk"ed me, essentially treating me like a small child, because I hadn't gotten a pap smear. I then politely informed her that I had gone to a gynecologist and they essentially said, "Why are you even here? My smallest speculum won't fit, you've never had sex, and you're super young. Go home. See me in a few years or if something bad happens." So I got to feel stupid twice. It was great.

Nurses keep insisting I get a test for chlamydia and won't remove it off my chart so every time I go to the doctors for something else it pops up and the receptionists try to get me to do it and make me pay for a lab I don't need or want.

No doctor will even touch my blocked ears but all of them refuse to believe they have no idea what's causing it. They don't know.

Go see an ENT. If you can't get a GP referral, refer yourself. It's not done often, but try telling them you don't have a GP, that usually works. Er, for the blocked ears. I know I'm way late on this, but hoping you have your notifs enabled. Not something to play fast and loose with, and it's more than likely a simple fix. (i.e., relief of an impaction, and/or antibiotics for infection, and/or treatment for ETD).

I saw several specialists. They haven't the foggiest. Thanks though.

Reminds of the time I had a blood test for HIV (I'm not sexually active, but it's a standard requirement for the type of antibiotic treatment for TB I was getting). Got the results back (Negative, like I figured it would be), and then the nurse practitioner who gave me the results told me my syphilis test was also negative. Which the the health department never informed me I was being tested for. Now I make sure that I know exactly everything they test me for when I get a blood test, becuase, yeah, big fan of informed consent.

That's horrible. Also, if you're where I'm from, it's more expensive.

This was one of the state run Health Departments, so I managed to swing it so that I only had to pay like $20 - $30 dollars each month for my antibiotics. Still.. Would have been nice to be informed I was being tested for more than just HIV prior to starting my treatment.

Yeah, really. Technically not getting consent is illegal, isn't it?

If your conscious and it's a supposed to be a standard bloodwork, technically yes (though I suppose they could have pulled the 'since I was doing this to rule out anything that would affect my TB treatment, they had to test for syphilis so that they could rule everything out, or other such bullshit line like that.

Wish I'd called them out back then, but oh well lesson learned and ask questions about everything now.

That's what I thought. :/

At least you're super involved now so it won't happen again.

That's a shitty excuse anyway. If syphilis could have caused treatment problems too they should have told you in the first place.
