Re: Stupidest Thing You've Ever Hear Out of a Doctor

TW for eating disorders, numbers.

My psychiatrist who, every visit, demanded that I have WLS for my fibromyalgia... never mind that gastric bypass (my gf had it done) has side effects of not being able to take anti-inflammatories which is kinda required for my RA, and that it also affects how birth control is absorbed, which is required to keep my PCOS and PMDD in control (otherwise I bleed constantly and suicidal -- and this is something that could perhaps be PERMANENT, and she KNEW about).

Mind, I'm under 200lbs, and because I'm 4'11, I am supposed to be "under 100lbs -- 100 lbs is overweight". Even though, at my thinnest, I was never under 120, because I have a heavy, broad bone structure and extra bone weight from the scoliosis (which she also knew about).

Also, when I asked her what this had to do with my mental health, which is what I was seeing her for, she said "Nothing, it's for your fibro"... WHY THE HELL ARE YOU SUGGESTING SURGERY FOR A CONDITION THAT YOU ARE NOT SPECIALIZED IN!?

... I got rid of that psych, and my new one is awesome (and was duly horrified when I explained what happened, and asked her not to bring up weight stuff because I have triggered disordered eating -- I'm fine, until someone starts telling me I should lose weight, etc, and fat-shaming me, even though I'm not that much overweight -- which my former psych also knew and continued to push even after I told her that it was a trigger.)

Grrrr, I'm STILL pissed off about this and I got my new psych last summer.

Uh. I'm 4'11". As far as I know, 100 lbs is a normal weight for someone our height, but you can be over that and still not be overweight, much less obese, at least going by BMI which isn't the only determining factor either. I haven't been 100 lbs since before I hit puberty, but at my healthiest I was probably at 120 or so. I had scary arm and leg muscles because I walked 10+ miles a day and when I wanted groceries I had to walk 4 miles to get them and then schlep them 4 miles back uphill. People are just assholes about weight sometimes, especially since wtf was a psychiatrist trying to get you to have surgery for? That's not their job! I'm glad the new one is working out better for you.

I wasn't saying that for all people of our height; I meant for me specifically. I'm very obviously stocky and broad boned, so it makes no sense to say that I should weigh the same as somebody who is fine boned with a lighter structure. I've certainly met people of my height who are 100lbs or under and are healthy! It's that she said that under 100lbs was the only healthy weight, which is BS. At my best I was about 125, because I walked 6miles every other day or so, and I had a lot of muscle.

My family on both sides also genetically tends towards overweight. When I went to my family reunion on my maternal side, the only women who were not short and plump (if not heavier) were the women who had married in. The thinnest was probably a size 12, and most others were around 16 or higher. Given that, and my PCOS and insulin resistance, and medications that cause weight gain (that are not optional; I have gained about 20lbs since going on my current form of bc, but it's the only one that has controlled my PCOS/PMDD and it's the 7th form I've been on, so I'll just deal with that extra 20lbs), and have chronic pain which makes exercise difficult, even though I'm on a healthy diet (for my insulin resistance), I am just not likely to lose it.

Yeah, it totally wasn't her job, and she was starting to get to the point of making my mental health medications dependent on if I had the surgery! That's where I finally left, because as bad as it was, I have huge new doctor anxiety and was terrified of getting someone worse. (Thankfully, my new psych is a lovely East Indian lady who was shocked that I was being undermedicated for the severity of my psych conditions, and actually listens to me. My former psych wanted me on SSRIs for my anxiety instead of benzodiazepines and my new psych was like, "But SSRIs can cause mania in people with bipolar, why would she suggest that?" Just a bad doc all around.)
