Re: Bullying

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently a fair bit, but I had a tendency to not fully understand what was happening. I'm not good at people, and get confused easily, so a lot of stuff that happened had to be explained to me later. It mostly tended to be more ... invisible sort of stuff? Things like making me run errands for them because I was too confused/intimidated to say no, making sure I was always the odd one out when group work was happening and dropping me as soon as possible if I was assigned to them, spreading rumours about me (didn't work so well because I just flat didn't notice that one, but apparently a couple of the teachers did). Stuff like that.

Back in primary school there was more overt stuff like name-calling and humiliation and hounding me, and one boy who decided to chase me with poo (I have no idea why, even still). Thing was, I kind of ... Um. I tended to react to overt attacks with overt attacks back, and/or just going straight to the nearest authority figure. I was a tattletale, less because I understood what the word meant, and more because that's what I thought you were supposed to do, so I did it. Every time. And one time a girl who'd been hounding me for a while snapped my last nerve and I completely flipped out at her and kind of ... clawed her back open. With my fingernails. Apparently she had a skin condition, which I hadn't known about, but it sort of made an impression, I think.

I have no idea if they changed or not later on. I don't keep up with people very well, and I've no idea where most of them even are by this stage. I'm still not even really sure how much of it was genuine bullying and how much was me being weird and just not getting stuff. And some of them seemed to stop while we were still in school together, sometimes because I got them into trouble, and some for no reason I ever found out.

I think I had a reputation for being a) weird, b) surprisingly violent if pushed, and c) oblivious otherwise. I think a lot of people tried bullying me for some reason, I think I attracted the impulse a lot, but it didn't tend to stick for long? Or I failed to notice it properly. Or I noticed it and over-reacted. Or I just told teachers and moved on.

I don't know, really. School was very strange for me. I got on mostly fine academically, but I never figured out how to do people, so I mostly ignored them unless they pushed. A lot of stuff happened that I still don't get.

The way you describe yourself makes me think we're kind of similar. I think my natural obliviousness protected me in a lot of ways when I was growing up.
