Re: Stupidest Thing You've Ever Hear Out of a Doctor

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-09 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
I nearly died during birth because of something the doctors missed. It was only a family friend being nearby who noticed that the monitors for my still-in-utero self were going crazy, and avoiding surgery was no longer a viable option. If she hadn't been there, I may not have survived being born.

And perhaps more recently - I went to a gynecologist's office at my local university medical center, and my doctor/nurse-practitioner mentioned that the CDC recommended everyone my age get tested for chlamydia, even if they didn't think they needed to. For context, she already knew I had almost no sexual experience at the time, and certainly none in the preceding few years. However, the phrasing made it sound like it was a data collection issue, so I agreed to the test. Guess who got a surprise bill asking for several hundred dollars for the test a few months later? -_- Luckily, after a few more months of back-and-forth, the hospital administration agreed the test was entirely unnecessary for my situation and dropped the charges, but still - total bullshit.

What sucks is that I loved my immediate experience with said nurse-practitioner, both in terms of 'bedside' manner, and just someone who was really aware of a variety of birth control methods and what they require in terms of lifestyle, non-judgemental, etc. If it hadn't been for her recommending a test she knew I didn't need and that I strongly suspect she was getting a kickback for, I would have whole-heartedly recommended her to everyone I know.

A few other visits later, and I think I'd prefer to stay away from that entire complex if I could. Unfortunately, there are not too many other places around here that accept my insurance, so even though more often than not I would rather go elsewhere, I have to go there. >.
