Because he's played much stronger roles in more prestigious, serious cinema.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
But the fact that he's dead doesn't have any affect on those other roles. It does affect this one.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly

It's not his best role, but I do enjoy the Hunger Games franchise and hate the idea of it being impacted by it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It affects all of the roles he could have done in the future that don't have anything to do with dystopian popcorn flicks, so yes, I still look askance.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Now you're just being intentionally obtuse.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, now you're just being an insufferable snob.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes but he completed those roles. The Hunger Games is still in the making.

Catching Fire was the most successful movie of 2013. It was the first thing I thought of too.

You're being a bit mean here. If someone's, say, YOUNG, they're going to know him for this. It's also his most recent movie.

As someone in her late twenties who watches "prestigious, serious cinema," this was also the first thing I thought of.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
How "prestigious" and "serious" of you oh elitist one.

That's what he was halfway through filming, very recently, with a big hit.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Where his primary ability as an actor was his ability to disappear into a role.

That's why I think it's tough to find roles to associate him with, and why I never felt an emotional connection to him as an actor - because he was so good at vanishing. I'm still sad he died and I think he was a genius, but I never felt any kind of identification with him as a figure. And I think even if you want to talk about the highlights of his acting career, there's always that element with him.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
This. When I found out he had died, I had to rack my brains to remember what films he was even in because I don't have any real recollections of him as an actor. I knew his name, but if you'd asked me to name a few films he'd been in, I couldn't tell you.

There's plenty of precedence for "prestigious, serious" actors getting more recognition for roles that weren't particularly serious.

Alec Guiness as Obi-Wan Kenobi
Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins
Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter
Ian McKellan as Gandalf/Magneto
Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Tim Curry in Clue or Rocky Horror
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man

etc.

like

i agree with you about what (I think) you're talking about it, but it's also a really dumb argument for reasons that have nothing to do with that

i kind of feel like we're talking about different things here. the reason i think the argument that anon is making is kind of dumb is because it seems to me like we're talking about immediate reactions to hearing the news, the immediate feelings that come up, and i think that's something that's going to be determined by your emotions about his various roles. and there's no reason to expect emotional reactions to be determined by quality. if we're talking about lasting memory and ultimate assessment, then yeah, i agree with you.

in other words: someone's thoughts and reactions on hearing about Hoffman dying are probably going to be about what they feel most strongly about, and there's no necessary reason you're going to care the most about his best acting, esp in a fandom community. i think it's totally plausible that someone could care a lot about Hunger Games and also think that Hoffman's best work was in Capote or The Master or something.

Like Twister and Mission: Impossible 3?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Those are the first ones that come to mind for me.

My fucking god, I just made that connection with Twister.

That's fucking crazy.
