For the one you mentioned - a lot of it has to do with a.) the concentration, and b.) the person in question. Some people with tough lungs get more out of smoking, but if your lungs are sensitive, then you will cough up too much of the smoke to get as much out of it than if you ingested it (where as some people have sensitive stomachs, so they're better off eating it). Generally speaking, smoking will make you feel the effects faster, but edibles will make the effects last longer.
(That said, almost all of that could really be said for any drug, and most of my knowledge concerns recreational use, not medicinal).
