I don't know why this grates on my nerves and I have never come across anyone else who cares but

"the reason why..."

The why just seems really superfluous to me.

Almost as frustrating as 'in my opinion'. I hate it so much when people say that. I know it's your opinion. If it were not, I assume you would not be telling me.

But "in my opinion" is critical in any conversation that even marginally involves academic research. You really need to differentiate your interpretation of metadata from the results of specific studies in those scenarios.

You didn't. I'm just using it to illustrate a situation where "in my opinion" is a useful qualifier. ...not sure how you figure that's self important, but I'm also not sure it matters.

It's "couldn't care less." If you could care less, then you still care.

...that's part of the joke.

I don't hate that in speech, because everyone uses a million filler phrases all the time in speech. I hate it in writing, though.

I hate that too, but what I hate more is the fear that someone's going to swoop in and yell "BUT THAT'S JUST YOUR OPINION!!!1!" if you don't say it yourself. ugh.

And that can happen so easily in online discussion.
