When Women Were Warriors by Catherine M Wilson. It's a fantasy trilogy and the first book is free on Kindle and Nook. Women being leaders, friends, lovers, enemies, and allies (lesbians everywhere, basically), and it was so good that immediately after the first book, I went out and bought the second and third, I couldn't stop myself.
