I am NOT Asian and wouldn't presume to call something one thing or another to you, but my guess would be that this comes from a lot of racist language referring to Asians as 'slant-eyes' in the same breath as using other slurs.

From my (pasty white) seat it can strike me as the same tone racists use to refer to 'blacks' and the nasty tone given to the straight-out correct term 'Mexican'. The area of the south I'm from, all three I've heard with as much vitriol and a particular pronunciation that they sound like absolute swear words.

I am not whitesplaining at all, this is just what my guess would be as to where sensitivity to that word comes from?

I'm not going to call Mexicans anything other than Mexicans, as if their very nationality is a dirty word. Fuck off.
