Oh my gods, YES. YES YES YES.

I get unbelievably upset about this very phenomenon. It's made worse by the fact that most of the people who freak out in this way have zero idea of what it takes to write a book and prepare it for publishing. They cannot and do not try to understand that the turnaround time for a fast writer is one to two years (with two being more than the norm than one), because writing a novel isn't actually easy and the editing process is a gods-damned bitch.

I submitted a secret about this back when the release date for the final Wheel of Time book was announced and every one was freaking out and saying that they wouldn't buy it and they'd boycott Tor thenceforth and that they'd never buy a Brandon Sanderson book again because how DARE he write some of this own books while working on WoT. I remember some guy was like, "my six-year-old son could put out a book faster than you people," and I was like, "a) NO HE FUCKING COULDN'T and b) if you're old enough to have a child, then you're old enough to not throw a fucking tantrum because you have to wait a little while to get something that you want."

Gaaaaah!

I remember being amazed that, back when he was working both series at the same time (One has since concluded, the other is still ongoing), Jim Butcher somehow had time to get out both the Codex Alera books once a year as well as The Dresden Files. Like. Clockwork. There are very very very few authors that could pull that off (I admit, he spoiled us).

And now there's a bit more time between the Dresden books...but they're getting longer, too so. It is what it is. I'm willing to wait. :)

Thank you, thank you! More people needs to realize this.

Omg, THIS! I recently finished a book that I didn't know was part of a series until I'd finished it. Given that I loved the book, I've become ridiculously excited to see what's next for the characters the next book will center on.

However, despite also recently finding out that the author is on social media, I'm still trying to come up with a way to tell the author more about how much I enjoyed the book/how much it's actually come to mean to me rather than pester or harass her about the next book even though no one seems to know when it's being released.

The sheer entitlement some have makes no sense to me.

Of course it makes sense. It's people who think they're the centre of the universe, just like when they were small children.

I don't think there can be anything wrong with telling the author how much the book has meant to you--I can't think of a higher compliment, tbh.

I second this.

My pet peeve when it comes to creators is when fans disregard the author or say that the author doesn't get their own characters when things don't go the way they (the fans) want. It's one thing to disagree with the creator and that's fine, but it's another thing to say that the creator doesn't know characters that they spent YEARS- YEARS -writing about and developing because of their disagreement.

Whenever I hear "if X isn't canon then the author obviously doesn't know the characters very well" or something LIKE it it tells me that the person is an entitled fan. No you do not know the characters better than their creator.

Also sending hate to the author because of how the story turns out, or sending death threats. That shit's unacceptable.

Also on waiting, yeah I agree. I guess I got kind of off topic, but these are things that really anger me when it comes to fans and the creator.

Generally the people who do that are the same people who only post comments on fics to demand that the author writes a sequel or a whole new fic tailored to their tastes.

Yuuuup. I apply this to video game developers and other creators, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
i agree w/ you :(

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. None of the people making this rants have ever tried it. Hell, even getting a short story published takes a lot of effort and sometimes a lot of back and forth with the editor, even after you've done 2-4 drafts (or more) on your own...
