It means a lot in the current climate, when the networks are losing tons of viewers to cable and need shows like this to stay relevant in the industry. NBC also doesn't have to pay to produce it and it attracts a profitable demographic, so it's a good deal for them.

The profitable demographic means nothing; the ratings average is so low that NBC can't charge more than the lowest rate for advertisers. That translates to the ad time going free of cost as part of the contract to the advertisers who have paid the most for ad time on the network in whole.
