As someone who's been in Merlin fandom for the past few years and still clinging on, thank you for saying this. Their love wasn't portrayed as romantic or sexual but IMO, it transcends that. It's that kind of neverending loyalty/soulmate kind of love that has Merlin canonically! waiting till present day.

And as a shipper I can take that kind of relationship and make it romantic -- that's my prerogative. I actually loved that they only had the confirmation right at the end, basically we got all the fanwork that "subtext" encouraged, and got to eat our cake too. Of course Arthur died but... it was perfect for the ship IMO.

For me it was more like Merlin had been so thoroughly brainwashed by the dragon that he couldn't fathom any sort of existence without slaving hand and foot after Arthur.

Sorry, but that whole final season left such a bad taste in my mouth.
