I have faith that Gatiss could make it work though. Not exactly sure how much pull he has in the writing partnership. But I feel like the Mark has a better grasp of the relationship than Moffat

Seeing that Gatiss gave us a completely butchered take on Hounds, where he even managed to butcher one of their nicest canon moments, I highly doubt that. I still, grind my teeth when I watch drugged!John dealing with his fears, because that's not only another take on the canon, but goes completely against it.

I had such high hopes for that episode, but the result was more than disappointing. It's not the worst episode of the show, but Gatiss' writing here leaves much to be desired, so I would rather not give Gatiss too much credit after all.

nayrt

And then he managed to screw up the reunion in TEH by going for too much humour over the seriousness of the situation. Did we really need John attacking Sherlock three times? And then the pointless 'off-switch' scene at the end?

Thompson is the only one who manages to bring any real warmth to the friendship IMO. Moffat gets it sometimes when he's not shoving his River Song clones in the way - first Irene, now Mary.
