I went through a similar phase when I was that age. I don't think there's anything wrong with you.

You shipped Little Red Riding Hood with the wolf.

Eh, when I was that age I was into teenage girl/older man ships, especially teacher/student - mine were... pretty romanticized and not specifically portrayed as rapey, but, you know. I'm retroactively pretty squicked by them too, but I feel like it must be a pretty common preference, and it's not like I was ever actually supporting those kinds of relationships in real life, so I don't feel too bad.

Nothing was/is wrong with you.

Edit: jfc, this thread is going to turn into a kink shaming thread, isn't it?

Nothing. A lot of people go through the very same thing. At that age, movies like this are introducing a fascinating (note: which is not the same thing as "good" or "healthy") type of relationship to girls/young women probably for the first time. It draws attention because it's different, adult, and has more than a little hint of the forbidden in it.

When you get older and more mature and gain more life experience, you see the bigger picture. It doesn't mean you were fucked up as a kid, it just means you didn't know... and how could you have known? It also means that it's perfectly fine to enjoy such dynamics in fiction, because fiction is not reality. Fiction can be a safe place to explore these situations safely, which is all good.

OMG I recognize that Tom Riddle/Ginny fanart -- the one of the shadow with the umbrella made of diary pages. That's one of my favorite fanarts EVER.

I was the same at the age. I shipped Erik/Christine like woah from The Phantom of the Opera. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I'm like...THIS IS NOT OKAY.

... I still ship Jareth/Sarah.

I never shipped any of those others, though, and I recognise most of them. Not sure what that says. Maybe I only ship teenage heroines with older villains if said older villains are a) pretty, and b) lose to her?

Or possibly c) David Bowie. That could be it either.

As I slowly scrolled down and saw the couples featured in this secret, I just KNEW that Jareth and Sarah had to be included. I was right, lol.

Who's the girl with the 90s-hair?

Don't know which girl you're talking about...

A lot of people have had that stage. I'm curious to explore any reason for that.

Er, as it were, I still ship Beej/Lydia, though I blame the cartoon version for that entirely. I don't know if that makes it better or worse.

I had a similar phase as a teenager too so I don't think there's anything wrong with you, what you like in fiction doesn't indicate what you like/advocate irl after all.

No real comment on the secret, but just popping in to say that the Unfortunate Events movie came out when I was 16, and what I principally took away from it was that Violet was very very attractive and although it was massively creepy I totally understood the count wanting to marry her. I may or may not have had fantasies of doing the same >.>

(oh gosh I'm so glad no one so far has come on to shame you about the overall trend)

Yeah, this is a pretty normal phase in terms of sexual development for girls at that age-- you're old enough to have crushes that verge on the sexual, to start looking at older guys, even adult men, instead of just boys your own age in terms of crush material. It's totally normal to be attracted to these pairings at that age because you are exploring the fantasy of young adolescent girls (like yourself and the slightly-older-girls you aspire to be like) being attractive to the men you are starting to feel attracted to.

It's nothing to be ashamed of, even if the same pairings are squicky to you as an adult-- and that's normal too, because when you're older, you see all the implications and the problems inherent to such things, and you see these relationships from an adult perspective. They seem wrong to you because now YOU'RE older.

It's also nothing to be ashamed of if this phase is a little longer. Plenty of adults like to imagine themselves in the same kind of vulnerable position, being pursued/courted by a more worldly lover. Some of them develop ageplay kinks where they like to pretend to be young, but not all do-- some just like the dynamic, with or without the dubious/nonexistent consent vibe.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I was like that. Still do it to this day and am not really squirmed out by it,

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
You grew up and realized why those pairings were problematic. That's what happened.

Still ship Jareth/Sarah and Beetlejuice/Lydia.

*shrug*

And Snape/Hermione.

Everything is aged up, so.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
...I still ship Jareth/Sarah. And Beetlejuice/Lydia. And Murdoc/Noodle. And many other ships which aren't pictured. I'm legally an adult too.

Now, which one of you SJWs wants to be first to tell me I'm a victim of the patriarchy and don't deserve to have my own agency because my fictional shippings squick you?

[personal profile] illiadandoddity 2014-02-15 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think older man/young girl is actually a power fantasy for young women, in its own way. You get to be beautiful and special enough to catch the attention of someone clearly more powerful than you, and that's a kind of power to a young teenager at the age of sexual awakening.

When you get older, you see how messed up that type of relationship is, but I think it's a very normal part of growing up.

(Although I still like Jareth/Sarah.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure Beetlejuice/Lydia is endgame for a lot of people -- at least if you're a fan of the cartoon.

To be fair the dynamic there is markedly different from the film.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
You are genetically programmed (as all women are) to seek out powerful, older men, who will be the best for mating and protection. Eroticism is part of that, because sex is an integral part of that. We're also more likely to be sexually attracted to those with differing genes to ourselves.

In modern society, of course, these natural instincts become unnecessary and seen as harmful, and we learn this as we get older. However, it remains the case that those relationships that maintain a modicum of the primal role balance have more sex. Just saying.

Gender equality is generally a good thing, but sex is good too. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Er.. you were going through your teenage phase?

Me, I shipped several of those in the secret, and I still do, even though I'm "comfortably middle aged".

I recognize that they're problematic, but they're fictional characters. Nothing wrong, as others said, about fantasizing being with a much older/powerful man. I ship those ships like burning, and judging by the sheer amount of older man/younger woman material out there, I know I'm not the only one (I'm also counting all the centuries-old-vampire/werewolf-who-look-the-heroine's-age stuff.).

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm an adult woman and I love that dynamic. I don't understand why you people get so squicked out by your younger selves, the line between fantasy and reality was clear to me even when I was younger and that allowed me to enjoy everything to my heart's content. You sound like you're still a kid yourself, maybe when you're older you'll understand this too?
