I have. (With original work, rather than fanfic.) Several times in fact (and I'm planning to do so with another if I can ever power through some significant block). One that comes to mind, specifically was a story I was writing in early 2011. Set in Japan, the villain had been trapped underground and his return was supposed to be heralded by a quake and the earth rending open. Literally just as I started writing that, someone I was chatting with told me to turn on the news.

So, yeah, time to shelve that one for a while.

(When I came back to it in early 2012, it still felt 'too soon', so I did it differently - less dramatically, but, whatever.)

Didn't get any complaints, but I hardly get feedback at all. (The drawback of doing original stuff. :p)

Oh jeez, yes. I wrote original fiction for a while and it's tough getting feedback on it. :\
