Hmm, we never read Scarlet Letter. I only know the premise through cultural osmosis.

We had the option to read Beowulf but didn't, and I think that one should be required. It's the indirect inspiration for a lot of modern fantasy.

Same for me with Scarlet Letter. Beowulf wasn't even an option either, though. We read King Oedipus and then Antigone at my school about the time most other schools read Beowulf. I probably would have liked Beowulf much better than those two.

Due to some changes in the curriculum, I never got Scarlet Letter either, but my sisters went to the same school before me (with many the same teachers) and they had to do that one. I didn't have to do any Austen or Brontës either. I had some weird things in my lit classes- Flannery O'Connor x2, Henry V instead of Othello (thank God!!)...

I read Scarlet Letter and was probably the only person who liked it, but I never read To Kill a Mockingbird. Or 1984. Or a ton of other required books.

I think I read the Scarlet Letter 3 times in junior high/high school and once in college. I hate that book now. D:
