Re: What books do you want to be required reading?

Outside of the traditional required lit, we read The Things They Carried my senior year, and that's probably the one that had the greatest effect on my view of literature.

I have not read a lot of the books people are mentioning! And I am surprised they let y'all read a book about personal accounts of the Vietnam war (if my Google search is correct).

It's fiction, but it's meta-fiction - the author served in Vietnam but the events are fiction. But the main character has the same name as the author but it's not supposed to be the author. The whole thing is as much an exploration of storytelling as it is a story about war, and it's phenomenal. We read it in a class called Current American Lit, where we only read books that had been written during our lifetimes, including also The Bluest Eye and The Road. So none of the subject matter was particularly safe, and it was the best English class I ever took.
