Hrm. I never realized how much they focus on the tragedies. But then again, I can't understand Shakespeare.

I maintain that the easiest way to learn to read Shakespeare is to read some Chaucer. Once you get the hang of Middle English, a bit of Elizabethan Modern English is no hurdle. That, and having an edition with good footnotes.

Whereas I tend to think the best way to learn Shakespeare is to get a bawdy dictionary/translation. Actually, same goes for Chaucer. I found both of them a lot easier (and enjoyable) when you realise that they're both sort of full of dirty jokes and terrible puns. I had an English teacher who also happened to be a History teacher, so she knew a lot of this stuff and could fill it in instead of the (usually rather dry) official notes. If nothing else, it made reading Romeo & Juliet a lot more fun. Especially for the nurse.

It also helps to realise that, language aside, Shakespeare was very much a 'bums on seats' style of writer. He's a lot less intimidating when you remember that he wasn't writing towards high-brow future academics, but towards ordinary people who wanted to watch a good story (with a few sly things thrown in for the more academic crowd as well). A lot of his characters are actually fabulously snarky and bitchy, as well as genuinely tragic and impressive and cool.

Yes, the nurse! One of the only two characters worth paying attention to in that play. High school teachers really do need to be less afraid of letting kids know about all the hilarious/dirty bits in Shakespeare. (This is another reason I want A Midsummer Night's Dream to get more attention at the high school level; how could any kid get through all of those "ass" puns and still think Shakespeare is boring?)
