I read it a long time ago too, but I got it two years running (8th and 9th grade), so here's what I remember.

There were, to my recollection, no female characters that actually appeared onscreen and did verbs. The female characters that were mentioned were the main protagonist's Dead Mother, and the girl who was "dating" the fat kid so that he would buy her things, who later dumps him because he can't afford the things she wants. Then in the sequel, we got a girl who actually had a tiny bit of screentime: Obie's (?) girlfriend who gets sexually assaulted as punishment for him questioning the actions of the secret society he's in.

Eeeeugh. I wish we had some "classics" that did a little better in the treatment of female characters.

I remember reading 1984 in high school, and thinking: "Wow, this book would be so much better if the author's issues with women didn't get in the way of all the political stuff."

I think when I read 1984, I attributed any shittiness toward women that I noticed to the repressive, totalitarian regime in which the story took place. In retrospect that may not actually have been what was going on, but I was happier for it.
