And the Topic Is...

Any suggestions for a topic for this informative or explanatory speech I have to do? Whatever you might be interested in hearing about, think of it that way.

Take a movie you like and make up some bullshit about the deep, meaningful symbolism in it.

What's a hobby you have that you're betting most of your audience hasn't experienced? Fandom counts.

How fanfic functions as one of the largest gift economies on earth. Community norms, BNFs, Yuletide, fic exchanges, kinkmemes... It's a self-created and self-policed gift economy existing just outside the bounds of copyright law.

A comparison between the original and reboot 'Robocop' films and their treatment of futurist and transhumanist themes, especially the nature of humanity and identity in an increasingly digitized and mechanized world.

Or just pick something you're interested in. It doesn't matter if your audience is interested in the subject originally (although tbh that helps a lot), your job is to make the audience believe that it is the most interesting thing in the world.

Something from your childhood? Something that gets you passionate, like food or books. As long as it's not, like, spark plugs - try to pick some scientific thing with a 'cool factor', preferably one you can do a demonstration on.

In the fandom vein, something that connects fandom and media as a whole might be interesting to a significant portion or your audience. I was thinking about the phenomenon of fandom and its influence on the popularity/success of a media franchise. Like how some creators dislike fanfic, but sometimes fanfic can work in their favor by drawing more interest to their franchise? idk

maybe that's not a very good one

are there topics that interest you? I'm really into biology so I'd probably do something about an animal that I like or some cool natural phenomenon. there are so many things that people take for granted that aren't really understood (or worse, that are straight-up misunderstood).

Actually when I had to do an explanatory speech a few years ago mine was fandom-related, sort of. Well, it was media-related. I did a speech on the history of The Legend of Zelda - it was cool because the year I did it was the 25th anniversary.
