i always felt kiiiiiinda bad for frank. but remember when his 'amusing anecdote' was the story about the wheelchair kid who lost control of his wheelchair and crashed into his dad's car? and the story about how his mom had to invite a ton of kids to his birthday parties just to get a couple to show up? and later, when everyone was stranded on the bus and frank hoarded his stash of candy bars until he was basically forced to share [which doesn't really have much to do with hawkeye, even tho he was there]?

hawkeye might have fanned the flames of frank's jerkitude, but it existed before he met hawkeye.

This, exactly. He often said, basically, 'nobody has ever liked me my whole life', and so - yeah, it makes you feel kinda sorry for him, 'cause he was a good guy a couple times (that time that Hawkeye had ragged on him in the OR and then Hawkeye's patient almost died because he's missed a tiny nick in a hard-to-reach part of the colon, and Frank said 'anybody could have missed that'....) but mostly he seemed to just be an unpleasant person.
