I agree, and writing is one of these things that generally get better with age (like fine wine!), but 40-something writers sometimes have difficulty writing teenagers as well. It's painfully obvious that some of them rely on tropes and stereotypes to write their high school AUs.

Those fics are usually the ones written by teenagers. If you ever see a teen character acting like they are in their mid-thirties, then dollars to donuts that was a teen writer. Teen writers generally make teen characters seem too old because they want to think teenagers are far more mature than they really are. Same with tropes and cliches, all teenagers start out by leaning too heavily on them simply because they do not yet have the life experience to step beyond them.

Separately, just to save me writing two posts on this thread, here is writer John Scalzi's advice to teen writers. Note rule 1.

Nah, older adults are the same exact way. All you need to do is go to the YA section of your bookstore to realize that.
