I speak two: French is my native language and I sort of speak English. I'm planning to learn German though! Dutch and Swedish are also in the plans but I don't want to overestimate my abilities.

Oh, French is one language I'd love to learn! I do have a few lessons on audio files that I'm going to try. ( I'm Swedish anon a few comments above, btw.)

Swedish anon again: I'd like that, certainly. Perhaps we could set up some sort of arragement? There is also a comm on Livejournal called learn_swedish.

Sounds great! In the mean time I downloaded a few Rosetta Stone language packs and when I find the time I'll give it a go, with the comm's help if I need it.

Aw, thank you anon! I always worry that I'm not making sense and I do my best to make my comments as clear as I can, so your comment is much appreciated.

It really never would have occurred to me that you're not a native English speaker! I don't know how you speak it, but you write it excellently. :)

Thank you! Lurking on f!s has actually helped me a lot with English when I was younger, so now I'm trying to participate to progress even more.

I feel I should be hurt that you would rather learn Swedish than Norwegian, but honestly Swedish is better.. .

Why do you say it's better? I ask cause I plan to learn one out of Norwegian, Swedish and Danish but haven't found much of an answer about which one makes it easier to understand the others.

More people speak Swedish than Norwegian or Danish. Swedish is the easiest to learn out of them as it has less* dialects. Swedish also have an easier tone and pronunciation than the other two.

Tho if you want to learn the one that can easiest understand the other two, Norwegian is your best bet, as we are the ones that understand Danish/Swedish best, but that might be because we have more entertainment in those languages so it is just that we are more used to it.

Danish is the hardest to understand for Norwegians and Swedes, as long as the Norwegian is spoken in a "standard dialect" and/or slightly slower. We all know how to do that, so as long as it is spoken slower and more clearly you will understand all of them.

I think when reading, Norwegian comes in between being similar to both Swedish and Danish (especially Danish as written Norwegian used to be Danish we just made it more Norwegian over time).

For a Norwegian it is easier to read Danish and hear Swedish, for the other two I have no idea, ask some of the Danish/Swedish Anons lurking around here.

Wow that was a non answer wasn't it? I have no idea, it depends. Also understanding the other two is complicated at times for native speakers, so I wouldn't bet on it. Sorry Anon, I tried, I would need to talk to a Dane and a Swede to be sure really, which probably could be done...

*Less as in the dialects aren't as different as the ones in Norwegian, where even Norwegians have trouble understanding some of them. Danish also seems to have the same problem, not that I know that much about it, but a friend of mine was in a McDonalds in Denmark and two of the employees spoke English to each other and when she asked why, they explained that it was easier for them to understand each other that way.

Swedish has a lot more stuff available, but yeah, I'd like to learn the one that would help me the most with the other two, cause I'm a big language nerd and want them all xD But maybe when the time comes it will be the one that clicks with me the most.

Aw, I think Norwegian is really interesting too! I'd just rather learn Swedish because it's closer to German and therefore easier to learn for me.
