All the fancasting of the Discworld novels. Did you miss this part where most Discworld characters are not supposed to be conventionally attractive and are often described as downright ugly? Hugh Laurie as Sam Vimes? Srsly? Hiddleston as Vetinari?

(on a related note, I feel like the only Holmesian who is really not thrilled about seeing Sir Ian McKellen as Holmes. Just... no.)

I wouldn't mind seeing Ian McKellen if it was a movie or series or whatever that was explicitly set late in Holmes' life after the main period of the canon when he's effectively retired.

Just playing Holmes in general? Then yeah, I definitely agree with you.

It's an actual thing that is going to be made, a screen version of one of Cullin's novels: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Slight_Trick_of_the_Mind

I don't see him playing this role, at all, no matter Holmes's age. His appearance is as un-Holmesian as it gets. And I dislike the book, too, starting from the premise.

Ah! I wasn't aware. The book doesn't sound especially interesting so I don't think I'll like the adaptation, but I don't think McKellen is that awful as an elderly Holmes. He wouldn't be my first choice but he's not that bad. Actually the more I think about it the less I like it. I don't know. You've put me in a confusing quandary dreemyweird.

Oh, no, he isn't awful (better than many Holmes actors). I didn't put him in this thread because I considered this to be teh worst casting choice ever. I simply thought my opinion on the upcoming film didn't warrant a thread of its own, so I might as well mention it in passing.

At least I'm not as alone as I thought. Everyone seems so excited.

...you think Ian McKellen is bad casting? I have two words for you, friend: MATT. FREWER. Yeah. That's right. Max freaking Headroom as Sherlock freaking Holmes.

That said, the movies weren't completely terrible. It was just. MAX HEADROOM DUDE WHAAAT.

I've seen the Matt Frewer thing, and I must say I don't get all the hate. Yes, his acting is OTT and he's no Jeremy Brett/Vasily Livanov/Ronald Howard/Ian Richardson, but at least his Holmes is lively and interesting. Funny, maybe, and definitely non-canonical, but not terrible. I don't think he's much worse than Ian McKellen will be.

/unpopular opinion is unpopular.

ETA: what I actually hate is Tom Baker's portrayal. Yes, I like it even less than Holmes from Sherlock the film and Holmes from the Asylum production. Tom Baker was awful.

I've never been able to pin down a head image of Vimes. Vetinari's been easy ever since Charles Dance played him (blond or not, he was perfect), but Vimes is always just almost there but not quite.

I think the closest I can get to my mental image is some godforsaken love child between Clint Eastwood and Richard Dean Anderson.

I have always pictured Vimes as aging Clint Eastwood! I didn't know anyone else went even remotely that direction! I'm so ridiculously pleased, lol. Based on book descriptions, I feel like it works pretty well (grizzled, balding, wiry, always chomping on a cigar...)

Vimes was wiry? I always thought he was a little tubby, going by the books, though I might have read that wrong.

I always pictured Ken Stott as Vimes, only without his Scottish accent.

I would pay any amount of money to see Sir Ian as Holmes in The Final Solution (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Final_Solution_%28novel%29). Other than that, not particularly interested.
