Re: How many languages do you speak ?

Not everyone has a gift for language. Even their own, let alone other people's. If it's something you've the time and talent for, or if you've grown up with multiple languages, then yes, have at it, but I tend to think that so long as you don't expect everyone to be able to speak your language/think your language is the only one worthwhile, then it doesn't matter how many languages you're able to speak personally.

At this point in my life, I only fluently speak English. I took Irish, French and German in school, and for a while I had fairly decent conversational French due to a couple of trips abroad where it got a workout, but it's gone rusty again. I also took reading Greek in college, though by this stage I've pretty much forgotten the Greek alphabet, let alone the language. I could probably get some of those back if I put the work in, but right now between work and family problems I don't have the time. Hopefully, later on, I'll get the chance again.

As well as those, I've got fragments and phrases and some vocabulary from about a dozen other languages, and I've a decent chance of being able to recognise words and even the gist of things in the Romance Languages owing to their similarities. I find etymology and the links between languages absolutely fascinating, and love listening to people talk about the differences/similarities in how languages work. It's very much other people's area of expertise, though, I just find it fascinating.

Add being deaf (NOT Deaf-with-a-capital-D note please) to that, and yeah. My answer is, "I had trouble with English as a FIRST language" when someone asks me that question. I don't begrudge those years of speech therapy hell, because I wouldn't have the mostly-integrated life I have today, if it wasn't for that.

(Before anyone asks: Can't do CSL or FLQ due to mobility impairment on one side. Tho' I could read a smattering of CSL when I was younger, mostly from church, it's all gone from me now.)

Yes to this. Dyslexia makes it hard enough for me with English.
