People invented words. They have only the meanings we collectively choose to give them. If enough people agreed that a particular word meant something different or was more or less objectionable than it is now, it would become the reality (and in fact this does happen, just slowly and usually not consciously for most of us. That's assuming somebody isn't gumming up the process by refusing to let everyone else forget how it started out.)
