Roberta! Seriously, so many people forget that Vetinari is as good as he is at least in part because a) Roberta and b) Margolotta.

The ball scene is still one of my favourites in Night Watch. How one woman silently and completely managed to set up an entire room full of nobles to witness the assassination of the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork and pretend to ignore it. Fantastic.

Oh my God don't even let me start about Madam. She is my favourite kind of badass - the sort who just quietly manipulates things to let them happen her way. And the fact that she does it by being a society lady is what just sells it to me. I just wish we could have seen more of her and Vetinari being magnificent bastards together, the little we saw in Night Watch was so ... tantalising!

It kills me when Vetinari thinks his aunt is a bit silly for having a smelly tomcat as a pet when we know he's going to get Wuffles, it is so precious!

I loved seeing young!Havelock still in the taking lessons phase. How it was Roberta who made him see how Keel's 'reading the street' was important in more than just the practical sense, how we get a glimpse of him learning what makes people tick, and it's coming so much from her. Vetinari is so entrenched in the Discworld canon by now as the unflappable, near-omniscient magnificent bastard he is that it was fascinating to see him back when he was only learning. Showing all the natural talent in the world, of course, but still learning.

And yes, young!Havelock's opinions on the merits of smelly animals is hilarious in hindsight. You wonder if he ever admitted such to himself.

I was impressed that Pterry could pull that off. A lot of the time, characters like that, writers don't want to ruin it to show them when they're young and still learning (unless it's a tragic backstory of course), and if it is done, the character more or less feels the same with maybe a different outfit. But in Night Watch, it's done without making him feel like he was always so omniscient and clever but without taking anything away from the character, Madam too is not just the all-knowing mentor, she's also a family member in that weird Vetinari way ... ah, I just really love everything about Night Watch.
