Re: How many languages do you speak ?
I can read German pretty well, because a lot of the words are similar to English/Norwegian.
and I understand Swedish/Danish, but that isn't really that difficultGrowing up in a country where they teach English from the 1st grade, I have a hard time remembering that not everyone knows more than their native language... We also take a third language from 8th grade, but that happened after I did Junior High School, so I only had German for 2 years instead of 5, which is why I am less fluent in it than I would have if I started school 3 years later.
As most of the people in my generation speaks at least 2 languages, the only friend I have that we think knows an abnormal amount of languages, is the one that speaks 5 languages fluently...
I understand why people who have English as their first language wouldn't have the same need as the rest of us to learn a second language tho, you don't experience the same language barrier as we do...
Oh this reminds me of an conversation I overheard outside a pub in London* and two ladies in their 30s talked about how they couldn't understand how anyone could learn a second language, I really, really wanted to say hi to them... But that would be rude and awkward so I didn't...
*I was standing outside smoking, not listening in on other peoples conversations on purpose.
