Re: How many languages do you speak ?
(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 04:16 am (UTC)(link)I assume we all speak English here (English comm, and all). Is learning a second language great? Absolutely. But it's not necessarily useful, or a particularly pressing investment for most people in the US, Canada, UK and Australia.
Why should someone from a small English-speaking town, far away from foreign countries or even significant foreign communities, "have" to learn a second language that they will never use? Why would that speak badly of them? I'm all for learning languages, not only as a cultural tool but also a mental exercise. But there are, frankly, probably a lot of better things many people could be committing their time to. Why do they deserve your judgment, if they never even communicate with people who are even ESL, let alone not fluent in English?
I say this as someone who speaks three languages (English, Japanese and Spanish).
