It doesn't exactly. The demo is basicly a taste of the fighting system and job selections. It's very barebone as far as demos goes, it has no story and the characters have no er...character. Since what you do in the demo is in no way part of the game, it doesn't carry over. You do get a few items at the beginning of the game for having completed quests in the demo though. And your streetpass villagers carry over.
It's a really nice game though. Just remember that the demo isn't representative of much exept for the fighting system and the look of the game.
It's basically a nes/snes era FF game in everything but name.

Eh, I loved snes era FF (last FF game I liked was 9) games so it sounds up my alley.
