Do you attentively watch the whole thing or just keep it as background noise/art/whatever?

Either way, I'm kind of surprised at your dedication. Sound's half the fun when it comes to movies for me and I remember really liking Totoro's soundtrack. I don't think I could watch 2 hours of any straight, completely soundless movie.

my neighbor totoro is geared more towards a younger audience so the plot is really simple but it follows the same themes of most of miyazaki's works (nature+spirituality, environmentalism, etc).

I sometimes watch even movies I like without sound and have them in the background. I'm doing something on the computer and I like to be able to look up and see the movie. Don't need to hear it.

Aw. I think this is really cute.

Question for the OP: do you listen to anything else when you turn down the sound? Like, do you choose music to be an alternative soundtrack?

I'm thinking now what music would go well with Totoro.

Debussy, perhaps? Something with lots of harps like La Mer.

Or modern instrumental music like Floex.

Or some Rautavaara, with its sampling of bird music, would mix well.

I found this movie unbearably dull, even when I was younger. ):

I love most of the Ghibli movies, but this one is still my favorite.

I love the atmosphere and music. Plot is pretty meh.

Strange. I rewatched it recently and one of the things I noticed was that the animation seemed so much simpler compared to the other movies.
